Here is the first, extended trailer for “Ghosts of the Aral Sea“, an upcoming documentary film shedding light on the lives of fishermen on the Aral Sea. The Aral Sea, located on the border between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, was once the fourth-largest inland sea in the world. However, in the last forty years the sea has all but disappeared, as its headwaters have been diverted for irrigating cotton fields. This film focuses on the story of two fishermen brothers, Islambek and Nurbek, as they encounter everyday challenges beneath the spectre of one of history’s greatest ecological nightmares. Directed and photographed by Lucas Smith for SVA’s MFA Social Documentary Film Program. Premiering in September 2012.
