Linked by causeways, this island chain stretches from Eriskay in the south to Berneray in the north, via South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, and North Uist, with Uist being the collective name for the entire chain. We visited Uist as part of a longer wild camping road trip through the Outer Hebrides in June. We took the ferry from Barra to Eriskay and travelled up through South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, and North Uist to Berneray, where the ferry departs for Harris. In this film we visit the rugged east coast of South Uist, heading off on short walks around Loch Eynort and Loch Skipport, in the shadow of impressive mountains like Hecla and Beinn Mhor. We wander around traditional thatched roofed houses at Howmore, indulge in fresh seafood at Namara and craft gin from North Uist Distillery, and brace ourselves for some cold water dips with friends at Baleshare Beach. We go cockling for the first time, and explore the beautiful beaches of Vallay tidal island, Hosta, and Balranald. Oh, and don’t forget Murdo the Shetland pony and his pals! To plan your own trip to Uist, check out our accompanying travel guide over on our blog - and be sure to stick around for the second half of our film where we share lots of Uist travel tips and talk more about the places featured in the film.
