Aortic Regurgitation (AR) - Heart Auscultation - Episode 2

For all 12 Heart Auscultation Sounds, visit the AMBOSS Cardiovascular Learning Card: Aortic regurgitation is a valvular heart disease characterized by the failure of the aortic valve to completely close at the end of systole, allowing a retrograde flow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle during diastole. This generates an early diastolic decrescendo murmur that is best heard at the left 2nd intercostal space (i.e., the aortic area) and/or at the right 3rd intercostal space (i.e., Erb point). The murmur does not radiate to the carotid arteries. Palpate the carotid pulse while auscultating the heart to relate the auscultatory findings to the cardiac cycle. The heart sounds and murmurs have been amplified for demonstration purposes.
