A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck central Colombia on Thursday, causing buildings in the capital to stagger.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck in Cumaral, southeast of Bogota.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the initial quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 and the aftershock had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenters of both quakes were about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Bogota. People in the city of 11 million felt buildings and floors shuddering from the midday quake.
“Everything was moving and people came out shouting, ’It’s shaking, it’s shaking!“ said Bogota resident Gonzalo Martin. - Because of the tremors, many people started running out into the street.“
Alarms sounded in Bogota as residents fled their homes and crowds gathered in the streets. The earthquake was also felt in other major cities such as Medellin and Cali.
