“Condemned” () is a color fire prevention film presented by (who else?) Fire Prevention Through Films. It was produced by Julian Olansky in cooperation with fire departments across Connecticut (Andover, Eagleville, Hebron, Mansfield, Willimantic, University of Connecticut Fire Dept.). The film warns against the dangers of fire and not having a proper fire safety plan. The film starts out by focussing heavily on the risks associated with carelessly smoking cigarettes at home before showing other scenarios that can turn deadly.
Quick portraits of people from different walks of life - baby girl, middle-aged man, elderly woman, young woman, little girl (0:06). Silhouette of firefighters operating hose trying to put out aggressive fire (0:21). Scenes of various homes engulfed in flames, black smoke fills frame; narrator recounts statistics of fire-related deaths (0:46). Middle-aged man works on repairs in garage, walls lined with power tools, chemicals, paint cans - lit cigarette falls from his fingers, flames erupt (1:08). Fire Engines dispatch from Eagleville Fire Department station (1:39). Firefighters battle flames of wood-paneled home, first responders cover deceased victim with fire blanket (1:58). Montage scenes of carelessness with cigarettes resulting in fire - College student sits in grandfather chair, writes on legal pad cramming for test - falls asleep with cigarette still lit in ashtray (2:28). Mother washes dishes in small kitchen, gets distracted by toddler and cigarette falls into trash (2:47). Older man fluffs pillow, lights cigarette and drinks while in bed (3:09). Bright orange flames bursting out of upper floor of apartment complex (facade looks similar to Solari Building in Boston) contrasts dark night sky, fire fighters scale ladder to reach upper floor (3:34). Elderly woman carried by fire fighter through crowd of first responders, witnesses to help (4:01). Body bag with fire victim is carefully brought down ladder (4:34). Boston Police van drives away from scene (4:57). Mother tends to baby in crib in dimly lit nursery (5:07). Mother bags items into brown grocery bag in sparsely decorated kitchen, heads to general store, realizes home with sleeping baby has caught fire (5:13). Images of damage done to fire-ravaged baby nursery, final image of still-smoking child’s toy (5:54). Group of young kids find matches in dashboard of car in front yard, sit on porch steps and watch with fascination as one kid lights up a match, they drop it in fear and fire quickly spreads (6:26). Hebron Fire Department truck pulls up to scene (7:14). Multiple fire trucks, firemen report to scene of full city block on fire - smoke covers half of the screen, firefighters aim hoses at buildings (7:38). Man carries furniture out of damaged home on to sidewalk (8:23). Andover Fire Department perhaps 1960 International Pumper fire truck drives along residential road; firemen ride on back ledge ready to perform “in-service inspection” (8:42). Firefighter carries out inspection in family home: mom irons in kitchen while young daughter stands at counter using a Kitchen Aid mixer; father and firefighter expect heating system, trash, storage, paint and open chemicals in basement (9:02). Three young children sit in front of fireplace (10:45). Firefighter heads up to attic, inspects improper wiring hanging from support beams (11:00). Electrical heater faces young child playing in bed (11:31). Firefighter places sticker with contact information for fire department on perhaps 1960s Western Electric A/B 554 3-62 Black Rotary Dial Wall Mount Telephone (11:52). Father sits with children and wife in family dining room to go over fire safety plan (12:02). Family heads up stairs learns about fire door in home, exiting through the windows (13:16). Another family sits down to roast turkey in fancy entertaining dining room with crystal chandelier (13:50). Positive uses of fire: Smoke fills screen as rocket prepares for blast off (14:03). Framework of metal structure exemplifies use of fire for welding (14:10). Cars drive speedily along highway, skyline of city appears ahead (14:20). Container ship pulls into harbor (14:29). Train of the Boston T Metro drives along elevated railway (14:32). Closing credits (15:04).
