Raleigh Police Officer Shoots Armed Suspect During Domestic Assault Call

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Raleigh, North Carolina — On February 10, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., Raleigh police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the vicinity of Vardaman Street and Hightower Street. After not finding a scene at that location, Officer M.L. Berg proceeded to the 800 block of Rock Quarry Road, where he heard multiple gunshots coming from the opposite end of the parking lot around 10:50 p.m.. While Officer Berg was conducting an investigative detention of an individual in a parking lot located in the 800 block of Rock Quarry Road, multiple shots were heard from the opposite end of the parking lot. Police said Officer Berg transmitted a notification of a “shots fired” over the police radio, drew his duty-issued firearm, and began to head towards where the shots were fired. Within seconds of the shots being fired, Officer Berg saw a man wearing dark clothing, and what appeared to be a firearm in his hand, quickly emerge from between two parked vehicles. Officer Berg orders the man to drop the gun and place his hands on his head. A man, identified as Ranses Vacramontes Vargas, continued to walk away from Officer Berg. He eventually runs behind a red pickup. Berg then shoots several times, hitting the truck before backing away. Berg then notices movement inside the red pickup. Inside the truck was a bystander not involved with Vargas. Berg’s gunshots hit and injured the bystander in the truck. Backup arrives, and the driver’s side door to the red truck opens as Officer B.W. Keaton gets out of his police vehicle and draws his weapon. Both Berg and Keaton yell for the people in the truck to show their hands. They find Vargas lying on the ground beside the truck with gunshot wounds. A gun can be seen on the ground by Vargas’ right leg. According to the police, officers recovered the gun as well as an additional magazine and rounds of ammunition. Vargas was treated for those injuries on the scene and at the hospital. Officers also found two women who they say Vargas shot before officers arrived.
