[Italy/Neapolitan] ’O Surdato ’nnammurato | The Soldier in Love [English Translation]

“’O Surdato ’nnammurato“ (“The Soldier in Love“) is a Neapolitan song from 1915, talking of a soldier who longs for the first woman of his life and how he misses her in between the postcards they send back and forth during his time on the frontline with an unmentioned Austria-Hungary. The words were written by Aniello Califano and the music composed by Enrico Cannio in 1915. This version was sung by Bruno Venturini sometime in either the 50s or 60s. This song is easily one of my favorites, and I’m certain my grandmother may have heard it before; but even if not, I’m certain she would have loved it.
