Landsberg am Lech, Germany Walking tour 4K. September 5, 2022. Landsberg am Lech is a city in Germany, on the Lech River, a district center, located in the state of Bavaria. The settlements on the site of today’s Lansberg are first mentioned in the chronicles of 1135. The fortress on the Castle Hill was founded in 1160. The settlement of Landesperch gradually grew up around the fortress. In the XIII century it received the status of a city. The city of Landsberg stood on the famous “salt“ road from Italy towards Augsburg. In 1320, the city authorities received the right to open customs posts and collect duties from carriers. Active trade, customs duties and the right to mint their own coins led to the rapid flourishing of the city. The city is home to Landsberg Prison, famous for serving Adolf Hitler’s sentence and for executing Nazi criminals sentenced to death at the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials.
