Celsus on the Christian heaven and hell. The 2nd century pagan critiques the extreme nature of hell.

Celsus the famous 2nd Century Greek pagan philosopher’s criticism of the Christian dogma of an eternal afterlife full of either bliss or extreme torture in heaven or hell. Celsus was the first critic who wrote extensively on Christianity and whose book ’The True Doctrine’ has survived in some form till today. Celsus accuses the Christians of terrorising people into converting. Instilling fear of the afterlife was the exact opposite of the stoic philosophy of not fearing death. Origen the third century Christian apologist tries to counter arguing the threat of hell is necessary to keep man on the straight and narrow and for leading him towards a virtuous life.
