SS Eastland Disaster - Chicago (1915)

This is footage taken of the rescue effort of the SS Eastland Disaster which happened on 24th July 1915 on the Chicago River. The ship rolled on to its side whilst docked. 844 passengers and crew were killed. Body of girl taken from deck. Shipwreck fatalities pulled out of water by soldiers; sailors; volunteers `. MS Men leaning down; pulling a rope tied round corpse of slender young woman -w/ long white or light coloured dress. Some other men below help to lift the girl’s body. One man unties rope. Shot showing bottom half of body and man’s legs; as they lift body onto a cot — she has on one shoe. They cover her w/ blanket. Men carry body away on stretcher - can see hair hanging off.
