One Basic Rule of Leg Pummeling: Guard Retention No Gi BJJ/Jiu-JItsu

Learning to retain your guard is one of jiu-jitsu’s most sought-after skills, and leg pummeling is critical to it. Here we focus on one simple rule when it comes to pummeling the legs back to the inside position and regaining that important inside position. We start from a fairly common situation: you’re supine (on your back), with a partner standing before you posting on your shins. It’s never a good idea to start reaching for someone’s legs from the supine guard, so instead we’re going to work on establishing inside position against their arms, which are much closer to us. The pummeling rule we follow goes like this: when looking to pummel against a straight arm, we chose to go under it. When looking to pummel against a bent arm, we go over it. From there you can go back into your other forms of offense, like ashi-garami or wrestling up. This simple strategy gives you a clear direction when it comes to bringing your legs back inside and retaining your guard against a resisting partner. ⭐
