Churchill Receives Freedom Of Brighton (1947)

Inside the Great Hall the Mayor Brighton, Alderman TE Morris JP makes a speech while Winston Churchill sits beside him and other dignitaries sit behind the pair. Cuts to the speech, but seems to be about giving Churchill the freedom of Brighton. The audience clap and cheer. Churchill rises to speak and moves the microphone forward. He is presented with the scroll and casket while photographers take flash pictures. In a hushed voice (not meant for everyone to hear) the Mayor tells Churchill the chair will be sent on to him in due course. Churchill asks quietly “Do I reply now?“. He is given a standing ovation. Churchill makes a speech, talking about receiving the freedom of Brighton. He speaks of his many memories of Brighton from his childhood. He says he was nearly 3 years at school “or rather, in Hove“ - laughs from audience. He mentio
