Alabama execution: Witnesses to Kenneth Smith’s nitrogen gas execution describe his final moments

Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58, was pronounced dead at 8:25 pm on Thursday after being administered pure nitrogen gas through a face mask in a first for the US penal system. Smith was convicted of a 1988 murder-for-hire plot and a previous effort to execute him by lethal injection in 2022 was unsuccessful.
