Cyclone Mocha bulking up in the Bay of Bengal - May 12, 2023
Cyclone Mocha has intensified overnight, and is now a Category 1 hurricane equivalent storm this morning local time. The storm currently appears to be consolidating with large bands of convection which covered the whole central region of the storm at times overnight. Mocha is expected to intensify, possibly rapidly, later today and tomorrow before making landfall near the border with Myanmar and Bangladesh sometime on Sunday.
Model projections continue to place a potential landfall intensity at Category 3 or 4, with winds possibly exceeding 200kph near the landfall zone, as well as a storm surge in excess of 3 metres (10 feet), and rainfall of up to 400mm (16 inches) in some coastal and inland locations.
Cyclone Mocha is large, and delivered significant rainfall to western India yesterday. Further rainfall of up to 9 inches could fall in Yangon.
