Cyclone Mocha Live Update and Discussion - May 11, 2023
After taking some time to form, Cyclone Mocha is now expediting and growing much stronger, with estimated winds now near 60mph (95kph). Rapid intensification is a significant possibility in the next couple of days as it makes its run up to landfall along the coast of Myanmar. Some computer models are still indicating the potential for this storm to become very powerful, and a catastrophic impact cannot be ruled out.
Heavy rainfall with accumulations of up to 250mm are likely along large swathes of coastal Myanmar, with strong winds of over 160kph in the landfall zone. A storm surge of over 2 metres is possible in the wider landfall area, particularly on the southern side of the storm.
