Pepe Deluxé - MaKing of CS: Instrumentarium

Preorder Comix Sonix here: INSTRUMENTARIUM showcases over 100 unique one-off instruments created by Bart Hopkin, an author, teacher, researcher, composer, musician, and instrument builder, and the former chief editor of “Experimental Musical Instruments“ magazine. Nearly two dozen of Bart’s instruments are featured on the upcoming Pepe Deluxé album “Comix Sonix”, and this video highlights six of them: • AQUAALT: This rocking lute features a stainless-steel bowl as its resonating body, causing ever-changing resonance shifts with a small amount of water moving on the bottom. Played by plucking, bowing, or even a slide, it offers dreamy effects. • ‘MOE FLUTE: This instrument uses a flexible magnetic strip over an open slit for pitch control. Pressing the strip down covers some portion of the slit, allowing for continuous pitch variation and glissando effects. • CITPHTO O.M.: A rotary music machine designed for repeating musical patterns, akin to the “Ostinato Machine“ but smaller. It features wooden arms activated by a rotating pillar, playing scrapers, bells, and percussion items to create customizable musical patterns. • SPOOLS & WHEELS: This instrument consists of tubes with one end covered by lightweight plastic diaphragms, creating tube drum-like sounds when a small wooden spool turns and vibrates the string attached to the diaphragm. It offers a diatonic scale over an octave and a third. • SUCTION POPS: Simulating the sound of a cork popping out of a bottle, this instrument spans two instruments and four octaves. Plungers inserted into tubes produce a popping sound when quickly pulled out. • SAVART’S WHEEL: A tuned rasp featuring a motorized rotating cylinder with carefully spaced ridges and valleys, with ridges on the edges producing different frequencies when a plectrum is held against them. The sound is projected through an attached Styrofoam cup.
