Nagorno-Karabakh: Over 88,000 refugees enter Armenia as UN prepares for up to 120,000

Following Azerbaijan’s military operation against Nagorno-Karabakh, over 88,000 individuals fled into Armenia on Friday. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) official predicts that the total number of refugees could reach 120,000, which is approximately the same as the entire population of the breakaway region that was recaptured by Azerbaijan last week. Kavita Belani, the UNHCR representative in Armenia, stated during a UN press briefing that large groups of weary and frightened people were congregating at registration centers. Meanwhile, the president of Armenia’s self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, has signed a decree stating that all state institutions will be dissolved by Jan. 1, 2024, according to Karabakh Armenian authorities.
