Russia’s Putin attends Collective Security Treaty Organisation summit in Minsk without Armenia

Leaders of CSTO countries attended on Thursday a summit of Collective Security Treaty Organization in Minsk, hosted by the Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. Heads of the member states, including Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a decision to develop the CSTO’s system of crisis response. Putin hailed what he called the group’s role in securing peace and stability in the region. The Russian-dominated security grouping held the summit with the absence of Armenia. Yerevan said earlier that CSTO failed to support it during the recent surge of conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno Karabakh. Nevertheless, Armenian foreign ministry said that withdrawal from CSTO is not on agenda now. The summit’s host, Belarusian President Lukashenko, was more outspoken in his criticism of Armenia. CSTO will further develop regional and international security and defence cooperation including peace keeping efforts, the summit participants said.
