This was because the chief engineer of Louis XIV of France, the Marquis de Vauban, had created an almost infallible siege method that rendered the star fortress—the gold standard of fortress defense—increasingly useless. To address this problem, engineers and tacticians devised a new system of defense in the 18th and 19th centuries: the polygonal fortress. With this fortification, the centuries-old struggle between defense and attack entered the next round.
