Haiti’s neighbors ponder intervention as gang violence spirals out of control
The Guardian reports about 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is under gang control. One criminal leader, nicknamed ‘Barbecue’ is alleged to be the most powerful man in the country.
Amid the crisis, the US withdrew some embassy staff and bolstered its mission’s security. Germany’s ambassador fled, relocating to the neighboring Dominican Republic. Some discussion is being held to send an international contingent to restore order, with the Salvadoran president expressing his readiness to assist.
Former US special envoy Daniel Foote went as far as to suggest an international military intervention, while El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has publicly asked for a UN mandate to “fix” the situation.
