Monstrous flood in China: streets turned into car graveyards

Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world Heavy rains have been raging in China for the third month. In Shaanxi Province (Northwest China), the rains caused landslides and mudflows. Heavy rain hit Yan’an in Shaanxi Province, and Zhidan and Wuqi Counties suffered significant damage. Late in the evening, Zhidan County received a historical maximum of 179.1 millimeters of rain in half an hour. The turbulent streams of water turned the streets into raging rivers. Hundreds of cars were washed away by the flood, creating a kind of car cemetery. The Ministry of Emergency Management of China reported that 328 people have died or gone missing as a result of various disasters over the past month. More than 1.1 million people were urgently relocated from dangerous areas. The damage for the month amounted to 76.9 billion yuan - about $ 10.1 billion. Compared with last year, losses from natural disasters in the country have more than doubled. And that’s not the end of it, because China is in the midst of a flood season that has started unusually early this year. Meteorologists’ forecasts for the near future are bleak: heavy rains are expected in several provinces of the country at once. #China #flood #flooding
