“Duga“ radar. 2015.

Duga (“arc“ or “curve“ in russian) was a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system used as part of the Soviet missile defense early-warning radar network. Its powerful radio signal was detected worldwide and got a nickname “the Russian Woodpecker“. The system consists of transmitting and receiving antennas, separated by about 60 km. Only receiving station near Chernobyl built by 1976 preserved to this day. Receiving station consists of two phased array antennas 140 and 80 meters high. The military town of Chernobyl-2 was built for the military and their families near the radar. After the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the radar was removed from alert status, and equipment was disabled.
