- Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 -- 28 July 1750) - Performer: Grigori Sokolov - Year of recording: probably 1990 (live in Munich, Germany) Bach/Busoni/Sokolov piano transcription of the “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ“ chorale prelude for organ (Orgel-Büchlein No. 41), BWV 639 (BC K68), written in 1713-1715. Bach’s Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book) contains chorale preludes for the church year written during composer’s service at Weimar (1708 - 1717). Such pieces, combining learned counterpoint with expressive meditation on the chorale on which the prelude is based, were new in conception. As organist at Weimar, Bach was charged with providing a harmonic underpinning for use by those assembled at church services who sang the Lutheran chorale tunes chosen for each day.
