The F1 Prototype, Honda’s RA270 | 1964 Footage | Powered By Honda

The Honda RA270 - our prototype F1 car. In early February 1964, we completed the first miles of our Formula 1 project In Arakawa and Suzuka. On it’s first day of running, the metallic-gold car completed two laps around the course. The RA270 recorded 8,500 rpm in fifth gear, with a maximum speed of 175 km per hour. The following week, on February 13, the RA270 tested at 210 horsepower with 11,800 rpm, exceeding the 200-horsepower mark for the first time. Fujiya Maruno, an engine design engineer who witnessed the test, made the entry in his notebook: “The Old Man is happy.“ Unfortunately this historic footage doesn’t come with any audio, but we hope you can enjoy seeing such a significant moment in Honda’s F1 story.
