Pair Production | Where Energy Converts Into Matter
Pair production is an interesting relativistic quantum phenomenon where energy converts into the matter. Pair production is the creation of a matter-antimatter pair from a neutral boson. The most famous example of pair production is the creation of an electron and a positron from a gamma-ray photon.
Pair production is a relativistic phenomenon. In 1925, Erwin Schrodinger and Werner Heisenberg gave their quantum pictures. The Schrodinger picture was known as wave mechanics. On the other hand, the Heisenberg picture was known as matrix mechanics. Both these quantum pictures were non-relativistic. Quantum mechanics and special relativity were combined by Paul Dirac in 1928. Dirac laid the theoretical foundation of antimatter. In 1932, antimatter was discovered by Carl Anderson.
There is the minimum energy that is required for pair production of electron-positron pairs. That energy is MeV. Pair production has applications in explaining the Hawking radiation also.
