Moledo Beach and Insua Fort aerial view - Caminha

Moledo Beach, on the northern end, close to the border to Spain just beside the river Minho, a lovely sandy beach, is distinguished mainly by its beautiful landscape. The dunes are protected from wooden walkways which combine with the landscape of the mountains that extends into the horizon. Insua Fort is located on a small island on the extreme northern Portugal guarding the River Minho which borders Portugal and Spain. A Monastery was founded in 1392 by franciscans in the island over a pre-existent small ermitage. Place of cult, the island was visited by King D. Manuel I after amplification of the monastery. Several wars with Spain and invasions from corsaries obliged the construction of the existing fortress, between 1649 and 1652. Its construction was ordered by D. Diogo de Lima. A well for drinking water supplied the garrison, consisting of a Governor (Commander) and twelve squares, alternating weekly. This well is notable for is at sea, being one of only three in the world.
