“March of the Markovsky Regiment“ — English subs and translation

White Movement (Russian Civil War), circa 1919 Donate & Support: The march of the “colour” Markovsky (1st Officer) regiment of the Volunteer Army - one of the most famous regiments of the White Guard. “Markovites“ (markovtsy) enjoyed the fame of the most restrained and cold-blooded warriors of the White Movement. The colours of their uniforms were black and white. Black colour meant mourning for the death of Russia, and white - the hope of its resurrection. As a battle banner, they used a black flag with a white St. Andrew’s cross. The song refers to the following events from the history of the so-called Ice March of the Volunteer Army: The battle for the Cossack village of Novodmitrijevskaja (March 28-29, 1918), when a thousand White Guards under the command of Markov, in a blizzard, forded across the river and seized the village defended by a three-thousand-strong Red detachment. The battle at Medvedovskaja (April 2–3, 1918) — the same thousand of Whites crushed the four thousand-strong Bolshevik detachment, supported by three armored trains, and two of them were captured. In both battles, General Markov personally led the attack of his soldiers, showing not only courage, but also military leadership talent and resourcefulness. The march is performed by the “Valaam“ choir. Portrayed by the Regiment’s namesake Lt. General Sergej Markov (1878—1918), one of the most prominent commanders of the Russian Army in the Great War and Russian White Movement in the Civil War.
