POLIGNANO A MARE

Polignano a mare is one of the most charming towns in the Apulia region, ideal for spending a beautiful summer vacation in southern Italy. Famous for being the birthplace of the Italian singer Domenico Modugno, for the song “Volare“. Loved for its scenic beauty, with its crystalline sea, incredible cliffs, numerous marine caves, as well as the beauty of its old town with its narrow streets and white houses. Polignano a mare is located in the province of Bari and can be reached quite easily by car or train from any city in Apulia or Italy. The Mother Church of Polignano is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and is located in Piazza Vittoria Emanuele II. The exterior of the church is very humble and bare with a late Renaissance portal surmounted by an elegant single lancet window. Much more impressive is the adjoining bell tower consisting of a tall tower. Despite the exterior, the interior of the church is rich in works of art, here is preserved a magnificent polyptych depicting the Madonna and Child attributed to Vivarini, an inlaid wooden pulpit from the 16th century, a baptismal font with a pyramid in polychrome marble from ’700 and several sculptures attributed to Stefano da Putignano. Also in this church are the remains of the patron Saint Vitus. I hope you enjoy this walking in Polignano a Mare made at the beginning of August 2023.
