He graduated from the Ljubljana Academy of Music, where he studied composition under L. M. Škerjanc (1950) and conducting under Danilo Švara (1951). Having first entered the world of music by learning the violin, he was eventually won over by the piano. Until 1959 when he left for Paris, Matičič taught harmony, counterpoint and music analysis at the Conservatoire of Music and Ballet and piano at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. His early compositions were influenced by the Classical period, Romanticism and Impressionism, while later, studying in Paris under the esteemed Nadia Boulanger, he turned towards contemporary trends in music.
