Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigns after losing majority support in parliament

Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here: Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigned on August 16, 2021, after tendering his resignation to the country’s king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. Muhyiddin stood down after 15 members of parliament from the Umno party withdrew their support from the ruling coalition government, Perikatan Nasional alliance. Without their votes, Muhyiddin’s parliamentary backing was reduced to below a simple majority of 111 among 220 lawmakers. There had been previous calls for his resignation over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Muhyiddin is the shortest-ruling leader in independent Malaysia’s history, having served only 17 months in office after coming to power in March 2020.
