White-Hat Attention Jacking for Accessibility, Fun & Profit • Chris Atherton • GOTO 2022

This presentation was recorded at GOTO Amsterdam 2022. #GOTOcon #GOTOams Chris Atherton - Designer & Former Neuroscientist ABSTRACT Attention: we don’t have a lot of it, and it’s hard to control. Things are even worse for those of us with cognitive problems, those who are getting older, who are stressed … or who just didn’t sleep well last night. When we build software, or make things for web, these are the users who need most help. And «they» are very often us! In this session, we’ll explore some common patterns of information overload and misdirection, and what’s really going on there from a psychology perspective. We’ll look at how time and space affect people’s ability to perceive information, and how to use this to create better user experiences. We’ll also talk about how to avoid disadvantaging vulnerable groups when we build things. This session is suitable for anyone, but will be especially useful for front-end developers and those creating content. It’s also a good introduction to (some) accessibility issues [...] TIMECODES 00:00 Intro 01:06 A typical website visit in 2022 05:10 Working memory 09:11 Cognitive load 11:48 Attention 14:56 Examples to learn from 28:13 Static tricks for steering attention 36:29 Tips 38:52 Outro Download slides and read the full abstract here: RECOMMENDED BOOKS Daniel Kahneman • Thinking, Fast and Slow • Thaler & Sunstein • Nudge • Dan Ariely • Predictably Irrational • Robert B Cialdini • Influence, New and Expanded • Fabio Pereira • Digital Nudge • Cathy O’Neil • Weapons of Math Destruction • Nir Eyal • Indistractable • Eckhart Tolle • The Power of Now • #UX #UI #UserExperience #UserInterface #GoodDesign #Frontend #BadDesign #Attention Looking for a unique learning experience?
