Ruhmkorff, Spark, or Ignition Coil

The operation of a Spark Coil is explained. A spark coil is then constructed and demonstrated, taking 9 volts DC and generating greater than 15,000 volts to achieve dielectric breakdown across a 0.5 cm gap. This is the concept behind a spark plug and spark coil in an Internal Combustion Engine. It is also what Heinrich Hertz used to launched electromagnetic waves (EMWs) in his experiments that proved the existence of EMWs.
