He received a Doctor degree from Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music(CCOM) where He studied composition with Professor Xiaogang Ye. From 2008, He teached music composition and Harmonielehre at CCOM as a lecturer. Now he is a Visiting Scholar of University of Missouri- Kansas City. Aside from contemporary music works, He also composed scores for movies, musicals, Dance Drama, TV Drama and Opening Ceremony,etc. As of 2010, Zhang Shuai’s government level prizes include China National Music Competition“ Golden Bell Award“ ,( twice) China Ministry of Culture New Composer Prize and China Guangdong Music Festival Prize (2002).
