NEW YORK — British artist David Hockney first visited California in the early 1960s after graduating from the Royal College of Art, London. The visit and several subsequent returns had a profound impact on Hockney, who later created a series of paintings around the outdoor swimming pool, that quality-of-life essential for those of means living in Southern California. Central to Hockney’s fascination with the pool was its epitomization of a people’s openness made possible through living in an amenable climat
