The Japanese Meteorological Agency reports that the earthquake originated near the Tokara chain of islands at a depth of 14 kilometers. More than five aftershocks were recorded on Akusekijima Island, four on Kodakarajima Island, and three in Amami City and Suvanosejima Island.
