Egyptians will not give border territory to Israel: Analyst

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the border zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt should be under Israel’s control. Netanyahu made the comments at a news conference where he also promised to continue Israel’s war on Gaza. “The Philadelphi Corridor – or to put it more correctly, the southern stoppage point [of Gaza] – must be in our hands. It must be shut. It is clear that any other arrangement would not ensure the demilitarisation that we seek,” he said. But “The Egyptians will not accept giving that territory to the Israelis,” Rami Khouri, the director of global engagement at the American University of Beirut told Al Jazeera. Egypt is responsible for patrolling the corridor, which was created with the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty of 1979, said Khouri. Tunnels underneath the corridor make it Palestinians “only outlet to the world”, Khouri added. The plan is one of many floated by Netanyahu, who Khouri said is “constantly negotiating” and “appealing to different audiences”.
