Chinese Y-12 Steals Show at Moscow Aviation Salon

The aircraft, produced by the Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Co. Ltd. (HAIG), a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), has caught widespread attention at the Moscoe air show, with many experts regarding it as the most airworthy civil aircraft of China. It is now used in many sectors including cargo, geological exploration, aerial photography and maritime monitoring. The aircraft’s splendid flight demonstration was greatly applauded by spectators at the air show. “Firrst of all, it is the first time for it to be shown outside the country. The second is that it flew over 6,000 kilometers or nearly 7,000 kilometers from Harbin to Russia. It is a real test to its airworthiness. It is very good,“ said Zhao Renbo, a pilot with HAIG. The Y-12 can be converted into a cargo plane after all the seats in the cabin are folded, allowing it to hold three lower deck cargo containers. Russian aviation authorities on Thursday certified the Y-12 for access to markets of member countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States. “If the manufacturers can modify the aircraft in accordance with the demands of customers, it will have a better future in Russia with its growing popularity,“ said Vasily, a representative with a Russian aviation company.
