Plaukė pylelė (Curonian-Samogitian hunting song | Šiaurės Žemaičių liaudies daina)

An old folk song from the surroundings of Kretinga in Northern Samogitia, the land of Curonians. Curonian tribe ceased to exist as a distinct unit half-a-millenia ago due to the Northern Crusades. After the Curonian revolts against the Teutonic crusaders were crushed, many Curonians fled from the Northern part of their lands to Southern Curonia and Samogitia which were controlled by then still pagan Grand Dutchy of Lithuania. After an intense period of Curonian-Samogitian bilingualism the new Northern Samogitian dialect was formed which is essentially “Lithuanian spoken with a heavy Curonian accent“.
