Bhutan’s royal wedding frenzy

Despite its modesty and simplicity, the first royal wedding under Bhutan’s democratic constitutional monarchy is fast becoming a national affair for the people of Bhutan. With everyone gearing up for this weekend’s public festivities, the wedding of king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and 21-year-old Jetsun Pema, is becoming a boon to the nation’s economy. Though Bhutan focuses on gross national happiness in lieu of the traditional measure of Gross Domestic Product, the festivities show the merging of the two.
