Tlatelolco 68 - Mexican Song about the Tlatelolco Massacre
I wasn’t able to get this out in October 2nd but I decided to finish it anyway, better late than never. A couple weeks ago was the 53rd anniversary of the Tlatelolco Massacre, a massacre that is so similar to Tiananmen and yet happened 19 years before Tiananmen even happened. You might not heard about this before, and I can’t blame you either, I just learned about this a year ago or 2.
In 1968, a series of protests occurred in Mexico City from Jul 26, 1968 – Oct 2, 1968 , protesting against Mexico hosting the 1968 Olympics and the restoration of (fair) democracy. At the time, Mexico was under a one-party state, headed by the PRI regime since the 1920s out of the ashes of the Mexican Revolution. Many of the protesters where students from universities (and collages but I’m not sure if I’m correct on that)
On October 2nd, the Mexican military, sent by former Mexican President: Gustavo Díaz-Ordaz, opened fire on the crowd at the Square of the Three Cultures (Plaza de las Tres Culturas) killing 350-400 people and injuring more than a thousand . A series of arrests and disappearances then followed after that, just like any US-backed Latin American government would do. This happened just 10 days before the Olympics were going to be held, and it happened like what nothing happend, the Mexican government sure covered it up heavily
Remember Tlatelolco,
“We don’t want Olympics, we want revolution!“
