Tonalist Master Study ✨ Oil Painting Process

Join me for an master study in oil paints, with Thomas Wilmer Dewing’s “Portrait of a Lady“ as my subject of choice. Tonalist paintings have such a mysterious air and a misty atmosphere, and I couldn’t resist trying to replicate that. Dewing’s painting is everything I would like my art to be - mysterious and haunting. I first found out about tonalism from Kelsey Rodriguez, so I gotta give her a shoutout: @KelseyRodriguez. I think that master studies are a great way to push your style in the direction of your idols, and I really recommend it as an exercise. An extra tip: when you’re doing a master copy, try to find a picture of it in the highest resolution possible. This can usually be done by going to the website of the museum that stores the painting. For this study, I was able to download a very heavy picture from the website of Smithsonian American Art Museum. 00:00 Introduction 00:23 About Tonalism 00:51 Tools & Materia
