Despite announcing major shifts in the Tory party’s green policies, Rishi Sunak has insisted the UK will still hit its target of carbon net zero by 2050. Political commentator James Melville says the conversation around ‘net zero’ needs to shift, instead of a focus on ‘draconian policies that hammer ordinary people’. In a recent announcement the Prime Minister said the ban on new petrol and diesel cars was being pushed back from 2030 to 2035, while the timeline on replacing gas boilers with heat pumps is also being relaxed.
