Legendary Singer Tina Turner Dies at 83, Leaving Behind a Trailblazing Legacy

Tina Turner, the legendary singer who rose from poverty and abuse to become one of the most successful and influential artists of all time, has died at the age of 83. She passed away peacefully after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday, her representative confirmed. Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee in 1939 and grew up in a sharecropping family. She began her career as a backup singer for her husband Ike Turner’s band The Kings of Rhythm in the late 1,950s. Together, they formed the duo Ike & Tina Turner and scored hits such as “Proud Mary” and “River Deep, Mountain High” in the 1960s and early 1970s. However, their relationship was marred by Ike’s physical and emotional abuse, which Tina revealed in her 1986 memoir “I, Tina” and the 1,993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It”.
