‘Our commander is gold. He always leads from the front’. That is how fighters from the People’s Militia of the LPR describe their battalion commander with the callsign ‘Wingman’. Wingman often fights on the front line right beside his troops. He has risked his life several times. The commander says that the war forced him to look at life differently: ‘I saw real people here, and I saw real men, peeled of everything, without any kind of shell. All that falls off very quickly’.
