For the Celtic people of Scotland, who lived in the Iron age, samhain marked the end of summer and kicked off the Celtic new year. The symbolism is strongly linked to a time of both death and rebirth at the end of a harvest season. The people of Scotland - pagan or not - have celebrated samhain ever since.
