Jerusalem’s Armenian community struggles to resist settlers: ‘We’re staying here on our land’

“We are staying here on our land… I think that we’ve proven to them that we are ready to make sacrifices.” Armenians living in the the Old City of Jerusalem are resisting against a real estate project and Israeli settlers who are threatening their quarter. There are an estimated 2,000 Armenians living in Jerusalem today, down from an estimated 16,000 in 1948 when the state of Israel was created. The Armenian Quarter, representing fourteen percent of the Old City at its southwestern corner, has been inhabited by Armenians since the 4th century during the inception of Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem.
