Renegade Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]

Developed and published by Imagine in 1987. This is the C64 conversion of the arcade game by Taito, a precursor of sorts to Double Dragon and I have to say that I have many happy yet frustrating memories of playing this. The game has a unique control scheme to get round the problem of single fire-button joysticks. You use a combination of the joystick to move and number keys to throw punches and kicks in the appropriate direction; it requires you to actually sit at the computer to play it, but it does work. The combat is all about timing, usually letting your opponent being his/her attack before cutting in with an attack of your own. The most potent move you have is the back-kick due to the fact that it stuns your opponent in a single hit, allowing you to kick them again for a knock-down. Unfortunately, the game lets itself down by becoming far too difficult by the 3rd level. The end-of-level boss is extremely difficult to beat, but it only gets worse if you make it to level 4 as the regular bad guys can kill you with a single stab from their knives. Graphically and sonically, it’s functional if slightly unremarkable. However, what really matters is the sprite collision and gameplay, which is pretty good (with the exception of the difficulty). The game went on to spawn 2 sequels that only appeared on the home computers/consoles of the time, Target Renegade and Renegade III. Enjoy! #retrogaming
