COP28: High stakes and little time to deliver on climate action

While the latest IPCC report states that the world is likely to surpass the 1.5°C threshold, increasingly frequent and devastating climate disasters worldwide call for urgent large-scale action. However, climate action is often one of many urgent priorities that must be addressed. The COP28, set to take place in Dubai a few months after the G20 Summit, the UN SDG Summit and the Africa Climate Summit, is “at a halfway point” between 2015 and the target year 2030. It will constitute a milestone as the Global Stocktake will reveal its conclusions, outlining progress made and further actions needed towards reaching the Paris Agreement goals. This session, held three weeks before COP28, will be an opportunity to assess its high stakes and how it can make a difference. It will also discuss the global roadmap(s) for effective climate action and a just and inclusive transition, addressed at various summits throughout the year.
