Mesoamerican Cotton Padded Armour vs Obsidian Tipped Atlatl Darts (Experiment footage)

All films and photo graphs taken by C. Berrington of which I am extremely grateful for. Taken August 14th 2022. UK. This video demonstrates a few moments during an experiment testing the effectiveness of Mesoamerican Cotton Padded Armour, otherwise called Ichcahhuipilli or Euyub/Escopil. Atlatl (also known as the Hul’che, Woomera, or dart/spear-thrower) darts tipped with obsidian points were launched at 5m, 10m & 15m marks to evaluate the armour’s ability to stop one of Mesoamerica’s most feared weapons. Cotton Padded Armour was worn near-universally by Mesoamerican warriors and the Spanish adopted the armour quickly, using it instead of metal armour - perhaps due to the humid conditions. This armour was made by two cotton sheets stuffed with cotton bolls quilted with thread. Included are some clips of myself missing its target, this is due to it still capturing the awesome flight path of the dart. This is a wholly educational video, and any questions regarding the experiment are welcome. 0:07 Deflection at 5m 0:14 Narrow miss at 15m 0:19 Wide miss at 15m 0:29 Successive shots showing a penetration at 10m (it looks like a deflection, but the tip actually broke off inside the armour) 0:40 A collection of photos showing some of the penetrations 0:50 Two photos demonstrating the far greater penetration without armour.
