Aftersun (2022) - Under Pressure

Aftersun is a 2022 coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Charlotte Wells in her directorial debut. Set in the late 1990s, the film follows Sophie (Frankie Corio), an 11-year-old girl, on holiday with her father (Paul Mescal) at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday. Celia Rowlson-Hall also features, playing Sophie as an adult. Aftersun was released in the United States on 21 October 2022 by A24 and in the United Kingdom a month later by Mubi. The film received acclaim from critics, who praised Wells’ direction and screenplay, and the performances of Corio and Mescal, who earned a nomination for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards. It was also named one of the best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review, received the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer at the 76th BAFTA awards and was awarded top place by Sight and Sound on its poll for the best films of the year.
